Can you imagine an office building so grand it houses part of the European Commission? Here at the North Light building, that’s a reality. North Light isn’t just another office block in Brussels. It’s a modern marvel, a testament to architectural ingenuity. Completed in February 2011, North Light stands tall with 15 floors above ground and 2 below. It’s designed in an H-shape, part of a complex with its twin, the Pole Star building. The North Light building was originally intended to be the headquarters of Fortis Bank. However, destiny had other plans. After the sale of Fortis Bank to BNP Paribas, the energy giant GDF Suez, later rebranded as Engie, took up residence. The North Light building has changed hands a few times. In 2013, a majority stake was sold to Belfius Insurance. Then, in 2017, it was acquired by a South Korean investment group. More recently, a Belgian consortium involving the government took ownership. Even Engie has downsized, subletting portions of North Light. As of 2024, various departments of the European Commission call North Light home, a sign of its prestige and strategic location in Brussels’ North District. So, next time you pass the North Light, remember, it’s more than just steel and glass. It’s a symbol of Brussels’ ever-evolving landscape.
