Built in 1617 this unassuming structure is the North Hinksey Conduit House. It’s more than just a building. It’s a testament to 17th-century ingenuity. This seemingly ordinary stone house played a vital role in Oxford’s history. It was the heart of the city’s first piped water system.

For centuries Oxford relied on wells and springs for water. These sources were often unreliable and prone to contamination. Otho Nicholson a lawyer saw the need for a better system. He envisioned clean water flowing directly to the city center. His vision was realized with the construction of the North Hinksey Conduit House.

This wasn’t a simple project. The water had to travel a significant distance from the springs on North Hinksey Hill. The solution involved a clever system of gravity-fed channels and a leaden cistern. This cistern housed an impressive 20000 gallons of water. The water then flowed underground through lead pipes encased in hollowed elm trunks. Imagine the work involved! This intricate network ensured a constant supply of clean water to the Carfax Conduit a fountain in the heart of Oxford.

Hugh Justyce a London plumber masterfully executed the project. He was a member and later warden of the London Plumbers’ Guild. His expertise was crucial in overcoming the engineering challenges. John Clark a Yorkshire stone carver was responsible for constructing the conduit house itself. The house stands as a sturdy single-story structure made of limestone ashlar. Its walls are four meters high. The building is adorned with the coat of arms of Otho Nicholson. It also features some beautifully preserved graffiti from centuries past.

The North Hinksey Conduit House served Oxford well for over two centuries. It continued to supply water until 1868. Today it stands as a fascinating glimpse into the past. A reminder of a time when innovation and craftsmanship brought clean water to a growing city. It reminds us that even the smallest and most unassuming buildings can have extraordinary stories to tell.
