Gazing upon North High School, can you sense the echoes of Saxon victories? North High School opened its doors in September 1955. It has become a landmark in Torrance, California. North High School is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a crucible where young minds are forged, athletes strive for greatness, and traditions are born. The school’s mascot, the Saxon, embodies strength and resilience. Their colors, blue and white, represent loyalty and pride. North High School boasts a sprawling campus with 24 buildings and 100 classrooms, serving students from north of 190th Street to the city’s northern boundaries. Imagine the countless students who have walked these halls, each with their own dreams and aspirations. North High School has a rich history of athletic achievement. The Saxons have claimed CIF championships in baseball, wrestling, and softball. The 1974 baseball championship game against Lakewood High School stands out as legendary. The game was tied 0-0 after reaching curfew at Anaheim Stadium. It was replayed in its entirety at USC’s Rod Dedeaux Field, resulting in a nail-biting 1-0 Saxon victory after a total of 21 innings! Pitcher Tim O’Neal pitched both games, securing his place in North High School lore. North High School’s influence extends beyond the playing field. The school’s marching band has consistently reached state championship levels, showcasing the dedication and talent of its musicians. Beyond academics and athletics, North High School has fostered a vibrant community. The campus radio station, KNHS, broadcasted from 1957 to 1991. It gave students a platform to express themselves and share their passion for music. The school’s JROTC program, established in 1996, has consistently earned the Honor Unit with Distinction. This program hosts the Golden Bear National Drill competition, the largest JROTC competition on the West Coast. North High School’s legacy extends beyond its walls.
