Bet you didn’t know that North Gorge headlands walk is one of Queensland’s most spectacular coastal walks. The iconic Gorge Walk is a must-do experience on Redlands Coast. This self-guided walk is 1.2 kilometers long. It follows the rocky headlands of Point Lookout on North Stradbroke Island. The island is also known as Minjerribah.

The North Gorge headlands walk offers expansive headland views. Look out over the Pacific Ocean on one side. On the other side, you will see coastal bushland and unique Australian wildlife. Kangaroos and wallabies are often seen here.

While taking in the incomparable view, keep your eyes peeled for majestic marine life. Sea turtles, giant manta rays and dolphins often ride the waves below. Between June and November each year, the North Gorge headlands walk offers ideal vantage points. It’s perfect for land-based whale watching. Thousands of humpback whales can be spotted traveling the seas during their migration. This coastline is often referred to as the humpback highway.

The North Gorge headlands walk is located at Point Lookout. This is on the northeastern tip of North Stradbroke Island. The walk begins at Mooloomba Road. It’s across the road from the Oceanic Gelati and Coffee Bar and Fishes at the Point. The walk ends just a little further down the road. You can do the full circuit, or just go as far as you wish. Then turn back.

There is plenty of parking at Headland Park. The local bus also stops here. Get off at the last stop. There are also public toilets here. You can also use the picnic facilities and water bubbler.

The North Gorge headlands walk is an easy walk. Much of it is along boardwalks. However, there are quite a number of steps along the route. It can be a little tricky with prams. Stop at all of the wonderful vantage points along the way. Take in the spectacular views and spot the amazing wildlife.

Being a headland walk, there are steep cliffs and rocky outcrops. Children must be supervised closely at all times. Remember to wear hats and suncream and bring plenty of water.

As you set off along the first stretch of the North Gorge headlands walk, enjoy beautiful views down over Frenchman’s Bay. You will then come to the first lookout point. This is a perfect spot for spotting marine life. You might see a really cool shark and two huge manta rays. They gracefully glide through the water.

You might also see some large schools of dolphins. They delight people with their playful antics. They ride waves like pro surfers and leap out of the water. Watching wild animals expend so much energy purely for their own sheer enjoyment is a truly spectacular sight to witness.

From here, a series of steps take you down to the rocks on the west side of the gorge. This is a great spot for seeing dolphins close-up. You can also sit and watch for whales during whale season. Then follow the boardwalk around the gorge. When the waters are calm, this is a great place for spotting some of the many sea turtles. They live in and around the gorge. Take your time and keep your eyes peeled.

Along the way, look out for kangaroos and other wildlife. You might see a giant lace monitor. It does its crazy diagonal leg walk along the boardwalk. You might even see an echidna right next to the path. It nibbles the bottom of a pandanus root to have a drink.

On the east side of the gorge, you can head down some steps to the rocks. One attraction is ‘Whale Rock’. It often makes the sound of spray from a whale’s blowhole. From here, follow the headland around. You will come to the most amazing view of one of the longest and most unspoilt stretches of coastline. This is Main Beach.

Locals hit the surf while sea eagles perch on branches. They enjoy their catch. Then it is just a short stroll back to the car park at Headland Park. Why not round off your walk with a picnic at Headland Park? Or have a play in the little playground by the bus stop. Head across the road for a delicious gelato. Enjoy it after all the hard work of marvelling at the many wonders of this unique and special place.
