Is it just me or does the air smell a bit fresher here at North Fork Peachtree Creek at Briarwood Road? This isn’t just any stream. It is a vital part of Atlanta’s story. We are standing at a point where nature and urban life meet.
North Fork Peachtree Creek is a major tributary. It feeds into the larger Peachtree Creek. The creek stretches 13.5 miles. It flows southwest from Gwinnett County. Its path runs almost parallel to Interstate 85. Finally, it meets the South Fork. This confluence is near the intersection of I-85 and Georgia 400.
But there’s more to the story. The North Fork Peachtree Creek is closely linked to the Peachtree Creek Greenway. This greenway is transforming the area. It offers a multi-use trail for everyone. Imagine walking or biking along a path. This path connects Atlanta, Brookhaven, Chamblee, and Doraville. The vision is becoming reality.
Currently, the Peachtree Creek Greenway runs 1.3 miles. It extends from North Druid Hills Road to where we are now at Briarwood Road. This section lies between I-85 and Buford Highway. It is a popular spot.
The Greenway is designed for everyone. It is ADA compliant and well-lit. Benches offer resting spots. Bike repair stations are available. Even dog waste stations are provided. The Greenway is open from 6 am to 11 pm every day.
The dream of the Peachtree Creek Greenway began in 2000. DeKalb County envisioned a path for pedestrians and cyclists. It would run along the North Fork of Peachtree Creek. In 2013, local residents formed Peachtree Creek Greenway Inc. This non-profit organization advocated for the greenway’s creation.
Brookhaven started funding the trail design in 2015. By 2018, the “Model Mile” groundbreaking occurred. This was thanks to a $15 million revenue bond. The Atlanta Regional Commission approved $2.7 million for Phase 2. In 2019, the first section of the Peachtree Creek Greenway opened in Brookhaven.
The project continues to expand. Atlanta funded its first section near PATH400 and I-85 in 2020. Chamblee adopted universal design standards. Planning for Phase 2 in Brookhaven began in 2021.
Many people are involved in this effort. Josh White is the Executive Director. He brings public affairs and fundraising experience. The Board of Directors includes dedicated individuals. They volunteer their time and expertise.
