Did you know North Charleston wasn’t always a city? For centuries this land was dotted with sprawling plantations. Indigo and rice thrived under the Carolina sun. Archdale Hall Plantation dating back to 1680 was one such estate. It boasted almost 3000 acres. Imagine the vastness of that land now occupied by the Archdale subdivision. Elms Plantation another grand estate was founded in 1682 by Ralph Izard. Its rice fields stretched across what are now Goose Creek and North Charleston. Today Charleston Southern University sits on a part of this historical land.

North Charleston’s story is one of transformation. From its plantation roots it evolved into a center of industry and military might. The Charleston Naval Shipyard opened in 1901. This brought thousands of jobs. The General Asbestos and Rubber Company GARCO built the world’s largest asbestos mill here. This contributed to North Charleston’s growth. During World War II the military bases and industries expanded bringing more people. New residents settled in the region seeking work.

But North Charleston’s identity wasn’t fully formed. For decades it remained unincorporated part of Charleston County. The community desired more control over its destiny. This desire led to numerous attempts to incorporate. Finally after legal battles and a series of referendums the dream was realized. On June 12 1972 North Charleston officially became a city. John E Bourne Jr became its first mayor.

The newly formed city immediately began annexing surrounding areas. This included the Naval Base the Air Force Base and Charleston International Airport. This dramatically increased its size and population. In just one year the population rose from 22000 to 53000. The city continued to develop. New churches shopping malls and residential neighborhoods sprung up. By 1976 North Charleston was the third-largest city in South Carolina.

The closure of the Charleston Naval Base in 1996 marked another turning point. This resulted in a significant loss of jobs. But it also presented opportunities. The vast land of the old base was redeveloped. This included the creation of Riverfront Park. Boeing chose North Charleston as the site for its 787 Dreamliner assembly and delivery prep center. This brought thousands of high-skilled jobs to the area. North Charleston now stands as one of the major aircraft centers of the world. The city’s story is a testament to perseverance progress and prosperity. A modern city built on a rich historical foundation. A city that continues to evolve and thrive.
