A remarkable turnaround. That’s how Ofsted described North Cambridge Academy’s academic achievements. North Cambridge Academy wasn’t always a beacon of academic success. This school on Arbury Road has a rich history. It began life around 1959 as Manor School a flagship school in Cambridge. Named after Manor Farm its location reflects a piece of Cambridge’s agricultural past. The farm once belonged to Cambridgeshire County Council who acquired it in 1909 from the Benson family of Chesterton Hall.

The school’s history isn’t without its dramatic moments. A devastating arson attack in June 1982 caused £400000 worth of damage. Martin Reid a former student was jailed for his involvement. His father was a prominent figure in Cambridge City Council. This incident casts a shadow on the Academy’s early years.

The school underwent significant changes in the years that followed. Under the leadership of Mr Cressy and later Ben Slade North Cambridge Academy saw remarkable improvements. Results soared. The percentage of students achieving five higher grades including English and Maths rose dramatically. The school’s transformation continued under Martin Campbell.

North Cambridge Academy also embraced the arts. In 2007 it gained specialist performing arts college status. The students even performed for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in 2012. This demonstrates the school’s commitment to arts education and its strong community ties.

In 2013 North Cambridge Academy became an academy joining the Meridian Trust. The name changed but the dedication to providing quality education remained. The school continues to thrive. It offers a state-of-the-art learning environment and strong partnerships with local businesses and Cambridge University. North Cambridge Academy’s journey is a testament to resilience and dedication. It’s a story of overcoming challenges and achieving remarkable success. It’s a story worth remembering.
