What if I told you this unassuming park was once just an idea? North Bridge Park is more than just a green space. It’s a testament to community desire and careful planning.
North Bridge Park is a public park in Charleston. It sits in the West Ashley area. The park is located on land owned by the South Carolina Department of Transportation. But the City of Charleston operates it. You will find North Bridge Park on the south shore. It is right where Sam Rittenberg Boulevard crosses the Ashley River.
For years this spot was an unofficial gathering place. Locals came to fish here. That’s according to Mayor Riley. He envisioned a safer more attractive space.
The construction of North Bridge Park cost about $1.5 million. Funding came from various sources. These included a General Obligation Bond. Charleston County Greenbelt funds also helped. Designated Reserve funds contributed as well.
The park officially opened on May 27 2014. It was designed as a “gateway” to West Ashley. Northbridge Park offers many amenities. There is a pier and dock for water access. A canoe and kayak launch makes getting on the Ashley River easy. You can enjoy a pleasant picnic here. There are tables available. Sixteen parking spaces provide convenient access. The park is ADA accessible.
Notice the pedestrian and bike path. It connects West Ashley to the park. Lighting and security cameras are installed under the bridge. These features ensure safety. There is also a pet station. It provides dog bags and waste disposal. A bicycle rack and drinking fountain are available.
The pier extends 200 feet. It’s a great spot for fishing. You can rent the park for events. Contact Charleston Recreation for rental information.
Keep in mind that water quality is tested weekly. This happens from May 1st to October 31st. Charleston Waterkeeper monitors the water. They test for Enterococcus bacteria. Swimming is not recommended if bacteria levels are high.
