Envision a critical mission: Thailand’s urgent development after World War II. Electricity was key to rapid economic recovery and it all started here at North Bangkok Power Plant.
The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand or EGAT built North Bangkok Power Plant. It started with 75 MW in 1959. Construction finished in 1962. The plant sits on the Chao Phraya River’s bank. It supported Bangkok’s growing electricity needs.
North Bangkok Power Plant became the “Master Plant”. It marked the start of modern power development. After 40 years, two new units were added. Unit 1 arrived in 2010 and Unit 2 in 2016. These units use natural gas from Myanmar.
This North Bangkok Power Plant’s location is very strategic. It is near the city’s electricity demand center. This saves money on transmission systems. It also reduces power loss and outages. The plant’s design blends well with the city and the Chao Phraya River.
North Bangkok Power Plant is a combined cycle plant. It generates 1498 MW. Block 1 produces 670 MW. Block 2 generates 828 MW.
Sumitomo Corporation played a key role in Block 2. They supplied equipment and handled construction. Alstom provided the main equipment.
In 2016, the plant’s capacity increased to 1,550 MW. This made North Bangkok Power Plant one of Thailand’s largest power stations. It also became one of the most efficient.
Thailand plans to expand North Bangkok Power Plant. A 700 MW phase is planned for 2028. Another 700 MW phase is expected by 2035.
North Bangkok Power Plant stands as a symbol. It represents Thailand’s commitment to progress. It also highlights the importance of electricity. This plant will continue to power the nation. It will also support future development.
