“Love, prayer, and service” are not just words here at Normandie Church of Christ. They are a way of life. This church stands as a beacon of hope and community in Los Angeles.
Normandie Church of Christ is more than just a place of worship. It is a center for those in need. It is a place where faith transforms into action. The church exists to proclaim the good news. It also models the Christian lifestyle. It strives to meet the needs of all people. The church aims to inspire a love for Christ. Finally, it equips believers for ministry.
Did you know that Normandie Church of Christ actively combats homelessness? Nineteen years ago, members started a program. They pooled their own money. With the help of volunteers, they fed 250 people sack lunches. That day marked the birth of Healing & Hope 4 the Homeless. Now, it provides enough food to last two weeks.
“We service anywhere from 250 to 400 individuals and families every two weeks,” says ‘Big’ Dave Norman. He is a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. The program gives out quality food items. Fresh vegetables and chicken are included. It is not just canned goods. They cover all basic food groups. This helps people get to the next distribution.
Most beneficiaries come from South Los Angeles. Some travel from other parts of the city. People often bring carts to carry the food. Imagine the impact. “If a person had no other funds to buy groceries, they could survive off of what we distribute,” Norman said. “For some homeless individuals, this is their main source of food.”
Volunteers are vital to the program. Members of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. assist. Norman invites his fraternity brothers to participate. This event aligns with their organization’s national programs. Zeta Phi Beta Sorority members also volunteer.
Healing & Hope 4 the Homeless always seeks volunteers. It is a great opportunity for high school students needing volunteer hours. You can call 888-822-7527 or visit healing4homeless.org for information. Normandie Church of Christ’s address is 6306 S. Normandie Avenue.
Normandie Church of Christ also enriches lives through music. Piano lessons are available for children and adults. Sara Araya offers these lessons. Mention the LA Standard and get your first lesson free.
The church has faced moments of sorrow too. The Normandie Church of Christ Reporter announced Carroll Pitts, Jr.’s passing. He was a longtime minister. His death was on September 26, 1987. His legacy lives on in the church’s continued work.
