“1896. A year of ice and innovation,” I begin, gesturing towards the Norddeutsche Eiswerke A. G. & Eisfabrik. “Imagine Berlin before refrigerators. How did breweries chill their beer? How did butchers keep meat fresh? The answer lies right here, within these historic walls.” The Norddeutsche Eiswerke A. G. & Eisfabrik stands as a testament to a time when ice was a precious commodity, a cornerstone of daily life. Founded by Carl Bolle, this factory revolutionized Berlin, providing a vital service to a rapidly growing city. It was here, in 1896, that Bolle’s vision took shape, transforming a plot on Köpenicker Straße into a hub of ice production. The factory began producing ice rods and blocks, essential for preserving food and cooling beverages. The factory expanded over the years. In 1914, a new ice machine from Linde AG significantly increased production. The Norddeutsche Eiswerke A. G. & Eisfabrik became an integral part of Berlin’s infrastructure. A tragic accident in 1914, when two masons fell from the scaffolding during chimney construction, served as a stark reminder of the risks involved in building such a complex. The factory endured through turbulent times, surviving wartime bombing that destroyed part of its residential building. It even played a role in a peculiar historical footnote. The warm wastewater from the factory was initially intended to feed a planned “Indian Garden” reminiscent of the Taj Mahal in the dried-up Luisenstädtischer Kanal. That plan was later abandoned, but the image of a Taj Mahal-inspired oasis in the heart of Berlin, warmed by the Norddeutsche Eiswerke, is a captivating one. Production at the Norddeutsche Eiswerke A. G. & Eisfabrik continued until 1991, a remarkable run for a technology that became obsolete in most households. Today, the factory stands silent. Yet, its presence resonates with the echoes of a bygone era. A time when ice was not just something you took for granted, but a product of ingenuity and a symbol of progress.
