Atop Naksan Mountain the wind whispers ancient secrets. This isn’t just any hill. This is Naksan a mountain with a history as rich as the soil below. Naksan meaning Camel Mountain it’s named for its humped silhouette. This is a place where history and nature intertwine.

For centuries Naksan was more than a scenic overlook. It served as a royal ranch supplying the palace with milk. Imagine the herds grazing peacefully their gentle lowing echoing through the valley. It was even known as Taraksan meaning Fermented Milk Mountain. This charming nickname speaks volumes about its importance to the royal court.

However times changed. The 1960s saw the encroachment of apartments and dense housing. Naksan the once-serene landscape was threatened by urban sprawl. But a story of resilience unfolded. The Seoul City Government launched a restoration plan. The result Naksan Park opened in 2002 a sanctuary reclaimed for the people.

Now stand here with me and look around. You can walk along the section of the Seoul Fortress Wall. It winds through the park offering breathtaking views. The historical legacy is still palpable here. Nearby you’ll find the Naksan Exhibition Hall a testament to the mountain’s preservation.

Explore the park’s hidden gems like Hongdeok Field. Legend tells of Hongdeok a court lady who made kimchi for Crown Prince Bongrim. He later became King Hyojong and remembered her delicious kimchi granting her land at Naksan’s foot. A simple cabbage farm became a symbol of this humble lady’s contribution.

Further along you’ll discover Biudang a humble thatched-roof house. This was once home to Yu Gwan a prime minister known for his integrity. Later it became a haven for scholar Yi Su-gwang who wrote the encyclopedia Jibongyuseol there. The house became known as Biudang meaning a house to take shelter from the rain.

And finally there’s Jajudong Spring. Its name holds a poignant story. Queen Jeongsun exiled after her husband King Danjong was overthrown dyed cloths here. She used the royal purple a reminder of her lost status and dignity.

Today Naksan Park is more than a park. It’s a living museum. It tells stories of royalty resilience and remarkable people. It showcases Seoul’s rich history and its dedication to preservation. Naksan stands as a beacon of nature’s enduring beauty within a bustling metropolis. Take a moment to breathe in the fresh air. Let the wind carry the echoes of the past. Let this mountain’s story weave its way into your own.
