Emerging from the shadows of giants like Toyota and Honda, Nissan carved its own path. Nissan Autoprodix in Saint Petersburg stands as a testament to this journey. It whispers tales of ambition, resilience, and adaptation. Let’s delve into the captivating story of Nissan Autoprodix. Nissan Autoprodix began its life in 2006 as Nissan Manufacturing Rus LLC. Nissan’s vision was to create a facility capable of producing 50,000 vehicles annually. The location? Pargolovo, a quaint village nestled within Saint Petersburg. Production commenced in 2009, churning out popular crossovers like the X-Trail, Murano, and Qashqai. Nissan Autoprodix, then Nissan Manufacturing Rus, quickly became a symbol of the growing Russian automotive market. By 2014, the plant expanded, doubling its capacity to 100,000 vehicles per year. This expansion mirrored Nissan’s growing confidence in the region. Then, the tides shifted. The year 2022 brought unforeseen challenges. The Russian invasion of Ukraine led to sanctions and component shortages. Production at Nissan Autoprodix ground to a halt. Uncertainty clouded the future. However, the story doesn’t end there. In a surprising twist, the Russian state enterprise NAMI acquired Nissan Manufacturing Rus. This included the Saint Petersburg plant, a research facility, and even sales offices in Moscow. The price? A symbolic €1, along with a six-year buyback option for Nissan. NAMI then sold 99% of the company to AvtoVAZ, the maker of Lada. AvtoVAZ envisioned a new chapter for Nissan Autoprodix. Their plan involved using the facility to produce C and D-segment vehicles. These would be released under the Lada and XCITE brands, signifying a shift in focus. In June 2023, Nissan Autoprodix underwent a final transformation. It was re-registered as Lada Saint Petersburg LLC. The first model under this new name? The Lada X-Cross 5, a rebadged Bestune T77 from China’s FAW. Nissan Autoprodix in Saint Petersburg exemplifies the unpredictable nature of the global automotive industry. It’s a story of ambition, setbacks, and ultimately, rebirth. From Nissan to Lada, the plant continues to contribute to Russia’s automotive landscape.
