Tucked away near the bustling Nishiki Market is a place of quiet reflection, Nishiki Tenman Shrine. This isn’t just any shrine. It’s a testament to a scholar, a politician, a poet, and ultimately, a deity. Nishiki Tenman Shrine is dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane. He lived during the Heian period (794-1185). He was so revered for his wisdom that he eventually became known as Tenjin, the god of learning. The shrine’s history is as fascinating as its enshrined deity. Established in 1003, it originally stood on the property of Michizane’s father. It was moved to its present location in 1587 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. He was restructuring Kyoto during the Azuchi-Momoyama period. Imagine the shrine, enduring through centuries, witnessing the ebb and flow of Kyoto’s history. The Onin War (1467-1477) brought damage and displacement. The Meiji era (1868-1912) saw it sever ties with Buddhism, solidifying its identity as a Shinto shrine. A fire in 1889 led to its reconstruction in 1890, shaping the Nishiki Tenman Shrine we see today. Notice the torii gate. Part of it is integrated into a nearby building, a quirky result of a planning oversight in 1935. Inside, you’ll find the karakuri mikuji. It’s a mechanical fortune-teller featuring a lion dance and fortunes available in English or for children. Look for the “Nishiki no Mizu” spring. Locals prize its supposedly beneficial waters. Don’t forget to admire the cow statue. Cows are considered messengers of Tenjin. Rubbing its head is believed to enhance your intellect. Nishiki Tenman Shrine offers a tranquil escape from the vibrant energy of the market. It provides a glimpse into Japan’s rich history and spiritual traditions.
