A young noblewoman, María Maximiliana Manriquez de Lara y Mendoza, arrives in Bohemia, a precious statue in her possession. It was a gift, a family heirloom passed down from her mother, who, legend has it, received it from Teresa of Ávila herself. Polyxena, María’s daughter, inherited this treasure, this symbol of divine grace. Years later, driven by faith and perhaps a touch of desperation, she entrusted the statue to the Discalced Carmelite friars with these words, “Honour this image and you shall never be poor.” And so, the Niño Jesús de Praga found its home.
