Ever heard the tale of a three-year curse lurking on a stone-paved path? That’s just one whisper surrounding Ninen zaka – sannen zaka.

Ninen zaka and Sannen zaka are ancient pedestrian roads in Kyoto. These roads attract tourists with traditional buildings and shops. They offer a glimpse into old Japan.

Sannen-zaka is also known as Sannei-zaka which means “safe delivery hill”. Legend says Empress Komyo dreamed of a monk guaranteeing a safe delivery if she had faith in Kannon. She enshrined a gold statue as a Buddha for safe childbirth at Kiyomizu Temple. Hideyoshi Toyotomi’s wife even prayed here.

Sannei-zaka Slope connects Yasaka-jinja Shrine, Kodai-ji Temple, and Kiyomizu-dera Temple. These sites make the area a popular destination. Souvenir shops, ceramic shops, and restaurants line the road. It’s a designated Preservation District for Groups of Historic Buildings.

Now, about that curse. The legend claims that if you fall on Sannei-zaka Slope, you’ll die within three years. But fear not. Buying a gourd at the slope’s base supposedly breaks the curse. The Koyasu Pagoda at Taisan-ji Temple offers safe childbirth prayers. Some believe this is the origin of the name “Sannenzaka”.

In 1972, the area earned recognition as a historic preservation district. It was the first legal preservation of urban regions in Japan. Traditional Kyo Machiya buildings line the streets. These buildings are made of wood, paper, and mud and were designed to withstand Kyoto’s weather. Businesses operated in the front. Living spaces were in the rear of the house. From 1999 to 2014, many buildings transformed into souvenir shops.

Sannenzaka developed during the Taisho era. It is loved for its nostalgic scenery. Retro-style buildings and gas lamps enhance the atmosphere. The removal of overhead power lines has further enhanced the area’s nostalgic charm.

When you visit Ninen zaka – sannen zaka, take your time. Wander along the stone-paved path. Enjoy the traditional crafts and street food. Explore pottery shops with Kyo-yaki and Kiyomizu-yaki styles. Taste Kyoto flavors like Yatsuhashi sweets.

To reach Sannenzaka, take the Kyoto City Bus. Get off at Gojo-zaka or Kiyomizu-michi bus stops. From there, walk five to ten minutes. Kiyomizu-dera Temple sits at the top of Sannenzaka. Nearby, you’ll find Kodai-ji Temple and Yasaka Shrine.

Soak in the charm of Ninen zaka – sannen zaka. Let its stories and flavors transport you. Just watch your step. And maybe buy a gourd for good measure.
