“Imagine a sentinel standing guard for centuries” The Nikolaiturm in Gorlitz a majestic tower greets you. Its presence speaks volumes. This 45-meter-tall structure is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a testament to Gorlitz’s rich history.

The Nikolaiturm is a relic of Gorlitz’s medieval fortifications. It likely existed before 1250. However its first documented mention dates back to 1348. The tower wasn’t just a lonely sentinel. It was once part of a fortified gateway with three gates a complex defensive system. The inner gate separated the tower from the Nikolaizwinger. The middle passage housed a portcullis. The outer gate protected the trench accessible by a drawbridge. Imagine the drawbridge raising to defend the city against threats.

After a devastating town fire in 1717 the original spire was lost. It was replaced by a Baroque hood that you can admire today. The military importance faded. The gateway bridge and trench were removed in 1848. Even the last tower guard left in 1904. For a long time the tower was practically forgotten.

Then a local society of history researchers took over in 1969. They used the Nikolaiturm to showcase their collection of old locks metal mounts and lights. You can still experience this unique exhibition on a guided tour. Today the Nikolaiturm serves as both a museum and an observation tower offering breathtaking views of Gorlitz. Its past present and future are interwoven in this single impressive landmark. As you gaze up at the Nikolaiturm consider the echoes of history within its walls.
