The Nikolaiturm is a relic of Gorlitz’s medieval fortifications. It likely existed before 1250. However its first documented mention dates back to 1348. The tower wasn’t just a lonely sentinel. It was once part of a fortified gateway with three gates a complex defensive system. The inner gate separated the tower from the Nikolaizwinger. The middle passage housed a portcullis. After a devastating town fire in 1717 the original spire was lost. It was replaced by a Baroque hood that you can admire today. The military importance faded.
