Planted sometime after World War II the Nikolaiforst stands as a testament to Flensburg’s enduring spirit. This city-managed forest, also known as Nikolaiwald, offers a green escape in the southwestern part of Flensburg. Its name carries echoes of the past. The Nikolaiforst is named after the Flensburg Nikolaikirche. It occupies what was once the Nikolaifeld, a field belonging to the church.

Imagine stepping into the Nikolaiforst. Sunlight filters through the canopy. The air is fresh and crisp. Birdsong fills the air. It is a welcome contrast to the urban environment nearby. The city of Flensburg actively manages the Nikolaiforst. This ensures its health and sustainability for generations to come.

The Nikolaiforst is bordered to the north by Nikolaiallee. This road once connected the church of St. Nikolai to its former lands. To the south, the Nikolaibek flows eastward. This small stream adds to the forest’s peaceful ambiance. Just south of the stream lies the Weiche rail triangle. This juxtaposition of nature and infrastructure is quite characteristic for this place.

Interestingly, there was a plan in 1995 to transform the Nikolaiforst. The goal was to replace the existing coniferous trees with native deciduous species. This initiative aimed to create a more ecologically balanced woodland.

As you wander through the Nikolaiforst keep an eye out for the local wildlife. Deer, hares, and foxes roam freely here. They add to the charm of this natural space.

About 400 meters north of the Nikolaiforst, the Marienau River flows eastward. Its valley, the Marienautal, is a protected landscape. It borders the forest. Together, they form a valuable natural area within Flensburg. The Nikolaiforst and its adjacent areas are recognized as priority nature zones. This designation highlights their importance for local biodiversity.

Although there were plans in 1995 to designate the Nikolaiforst as a protected landscape area, this was not pursued further. Today, the forest is under the care of Flensburg’s technical service center. The Nikolaiforst offers a tranquil escape. It is a reminder of the city’s commitment to preserving its natural heritage amidst urban development. Take a moment to appreciate this green space and the stories it holds.
