Interestingly, Niederwiesa started as one place. Can you believe that Niederwiesa, as we know it, once shared its identity with Oberwiesa? Today, let’s explore Niederwiesa. It is a municipality bordering Chemnitz. Niederwiesa is in the district of Central Saxony.

Niederwiesa’s history is rooted in the 13th century. The districts of Niederwiesa, Braunsdorf, and Lichtenwalde were founded then. Niederwiesa got its name from the area. The church built in 1898 characterizes it. You can also find the town hall here. Do not forget to spot the post mile column.

Niederwiesa sits on the Zschopau River. It is just ten kilometers east of Chemnitz. The lowest point is 252 meters above sea level. A section reaches up to 410 meters on the Beutenberg.

Around 1216, Wiesa was likely founded. Back then, people did not distinguish between Oberwiesa and Niederwiesa. In 1346, Wiesa was first mentioned as Wissen. It was in the register of the Diocese of Meißen. By 1378, the distinction between Wese superior and Wese inferior appeared.

Niederwiesa has been linked to Chemnitz. In 1509, a beer war erupted. It was about brewing rights. In 1563, Oberwiesa and Niederwiesa split. A church school appeared in Niederwiesa around 1540. The teachers had side jobs. They were craftsmen or shopkeepers.

Niederwiesa had a clear rural structure. It focused on agriculture until the 19th century. Coal was mined around 1836. In 1866, the Niederwiesa station opened. It was on the Dresden-Werdau railway line. Trade developed with connections to major cities. In 1884, another brewery opened. Today, it is the Brauhof restaurant.

In 1914, Oberwiesa and Niederwiesa merged. They formed the municipality of Wiesa. In 1915, the municipality was renamed Niederwiesa. In 1952, Niederwiesa became part of the Flöha district. Since 2008, it has been part of the Mittelsachsen district.

Braunsdorf was incorporated in 1995. Lichtenwalde followed in 1996.

Niederwiesa has an interesting coat of arms. It shows a reaper by a river. Three stones are in the foreground. Three trees and the Braunsdorf water tower are behind. The river is the Zschopau. The stones represent Niederwiesa, Braunsdorf, and Lichtenwalde. The coat of arms combines the individual coats of arms.

Since 1990, Niederwiesa has partnered with Bestwig. In 2005, a partnership with Tiszadorogma began. In 2010, it expanded to Ároktő.

Niederwiesa offers museums. The Fire Brigade Museum has 7,000 exhibits. It dates back to the 19th century. The Tannenhauer weaving mill in Braunsdorf is now a museum. It showcases weaving techniques. Lichtenwalde Castle houses several museums. They display art and cultural history.

Baroque Lichtenwalde Castle is a highlight. It was built between 1722 and 1726. The baroque garden was added in 1730. Concerts often take place there.

Niederwiesa is easily accessible. It is on the B173 highway. It is near the Chemnitz-Ost exit of the A4 motorway.

Niederwiesa is well-connected by rail. The C15 city train runs between Chemnitz and Hainichen. The Niederwiesa station is on the Dresden-Werdau line. Regional trains connect to Olbernhau and Cranzahl.

Niederwiesa has two kindergartens. It also has a primary school and a secondary school.

Niederwiesa’s story is one of mergers, beer wars, and industrial growth. It is a place where history meets modern life. From its early beginnings to its present-day form, Niederwiesa has evolved. It shows its resilience. It continues to embrace its rich heritage.
