Spanning the Saalehafen harbor in Hamburg, the Niedernfelder Brücke isn’t just a bridge. It’s a testament to engineering ingenuity and a vital artery in the city’s bustling port. The current steel tied-arch bridges you see before you replaced older structures, some dating back to 1914. These original superstructures, with spans of about 75 meters, had aged and needed replacing. The Niedernfelder Brücke complex consists of four separate bridges. Two, 13a and 13b, carry the harbor railway lines. The other two, 182 and 13c, accommodate the Veddeler Damm road traffic across the Saalehafen. The replacement process was a marvel of modern engineering. The new steel tied-arch bridges, each with a span of approximately 60 meters, were constructed at a pre-assembly site southeast of the Niedernfelder Brücke. Then, using platform wagons, the massive structures were moved into the extended bridge axis. Finally, they were floated into position with the help of a pontoon, taking advantage of the tidal changes in the harbor, and carefully lowered onto their bearing points. This intricate process allowed for minimal disruption to the busy port and road traffic. The replacement occurred in stages. New substructures were built in front of the old ones, and each bridge was replaced one by one. After the bearings and transition structures were installed, the bridges were completed with railings, asphalt, or railway tracks, depending on their function. Then, they were put back into operation, ensuring a smooth transition for the city. The Niedernfelder Brücke stands today as a vital link in Hamburg’s infrastructure. It represents the ongoing evolution of the city’s port and its commitment to innovative engineering solutions.
