Journey back in time with me to the founding of Niedermünster. This wasn’t just any church. It held immense power and wealth in Bavaria.

Niedermünster’s story begins long ago. A religious community first gathered here around 788. Tassilo III Duke of Bavaria is credited with its founding. Saint Erhard may have even established a nunnery here. It’s a bit unclear if the community was initially for men or women. But it blossomed into a significant women’s religious house in Germany.

Around 950 Henry I Duke of Bavaria rebuilt Niedermünster on a grand scale. He was later buried here. His widow Judith also played a vital role. She generously supported the community. She became its abbess and was buried here in 990.

Because of its connection to the Imperial Ottonian house Niedermünster gained power. Its treasures included the Rule of about 990 and the Uta Codex. The Uta Codex is an Evangeliary from about 1025 with a chased gold casket. An abbess commissioned it. It even depicts Saint Erhard presiding at Mass. Queen Gisela also gifted a magnificent cross. She was the daughter of Henry II Duke of Bavaria and wife of King Stephen I of Hungary. The cross marked the tomb of her mother Duchess Gisela of Bavaria who was buried here in 1006.

Emperor Henry II granted Niedermünster Reichsfreiheit in 1002. This gave the community territorial and judicial independence. It then became an Imperial abbey or Reichsstift.

Later Emperor Henry II favored Bamberg Cathedral. Niedermünster then lost prominence. A fire ravaged the previous church in 1152. The present Romanesque church was then built. But the crypt of Saint Erhard remains from the earlier structure.

The church saw some modernization in the 17th and 18th centuries. Important artworks were added including a bronze crucifix by Georg Petel. The silver shrine holding Saint Erhard’s relics dates from the 19th century.

Niedermünster was dissolved in 1803 during the secularization of Bavaria. The premises were partly rented out from 1820. In 1821 the Bishop of Regensburg took up residence here. The former canonry church replaced St Ulrich’s as the cathedral parish church.

During excavations foundations of Roman military buildings were found. Also predecessors of the church were uncovered. You can view these on guided tours. Plans exist to make these unique discoveries more accessible.

Niedermünster stands as a testament to Regensburg’s layered past. It is a Roman military camp. It is a palatine chapel. It is also an aristocratic convent. Its walls whisper tales of dukes and abbesses. Their legacies are interwoven into the very stones beneath our feet. The story of Niedermünster is a story of faith power and enduring heritage.
