Welcome. Today we explore a unique church in Ho Chi Minh City. It blends Chinese and Western styles. This is Nh\u00e0 th\u1edd Gi\u00e1o x\u1ee9 Th\u00e1nh Giuse.

Let’s step inside Nh\u00e0 th\u1edd Gi\u00e1o x\u1ee9 Th\u00e1nh Giuse. Notice the Chinese character “Phuoc” above the central cross. “Phuoc” means blessing. This symbolizes harmony.

Look around Nh\u00e0 th\u1edd Gi\u00e1o x\u1ee9 Th\u00e1nh Giuse. Vermillion pillars stand out. This color is rare in Gothic structures. Chinese parallel sentences adorn the central pillars. They advise kindness.

Nh\u00e0 th\u1edd Gi\u00e1o x\u1ee9 Th\u00e1nh Giuse is also known as Cha Tam Church. Priest Pierre d’Assou or Cha Tam built it. He served at Saigon Cathedral. He noticed a decline in Chinese and Vietnamese Catholics. They lacked a place to worship.

Admiral Lagrandi\u00e8re ordered a church built. His hope was to revive the Chinese Catholic community. Bishop Jean Pierre delegated Priest Pierre d’Assou. He organized donations from Catholics and non-Catholics. Local residents and Chinese merchants contributed.

Cha Tam found a three-hectare plot. It was owned by nine Chinese individuals. After overcoming many difficulties he bought the land. Construction began December 3rd 1900 on the feast of Saint Francis Xavier. Father John the Baptist Huynh Tinh Huong designed it. The church was inaugurated January 10th 1902. Priests parishioners and officials attended.

Besides the church a kindergarten a boarding house and rental houses were built. This provided a place for local Catholics to stay.

In 1934 Priest Pierre d’Assou passed away. He was buried near the church entrance. The church faced deterioration. Parishioner numbers decreased. Priests from China solved this in 1952.

Nh\u00e0 th\u1edd Gi\u00e1o x\u1ee9 Th\u00e1nh Giuse’s grounds include a yard a house of charity houses for rent a kindergarten a community house a school and a meeting hall. Each serves different purposes.

A statue of Mary Mother stands in the front yard. It is housed in a traditional Chinese-style structure. Reliefs depict Chinese and Vietnamese Martyrs. Saint Francis Xavier is worshiped in a yellow and white Gothic-style house.

The main gate is a triple-arched entrance. This is a symbolic structure of China. Instead of dragons and the Sun two carps and a Christian cross are used. The church’s name is written in Vietnamese and Mandarin Chinese.

Inside Nh\u00e0 th\u1edd Gi\u00e1o x\u1ee9 Th\u00e1nh Giuse the nave is built in typical Gothic style. Cylinder-shaped pillars in green and white stand tall. Wooden furniture adds to the familiar sanctuary feel.
