“Where does the name Sao Cat come from?” a young voice chirped. The question, echoing through the courtyard of Nhà thờ giáo xứ Sao Cat, seemed to hang in the air. It was a fitting query as we stood before the sturdy granite church. Nhà thờ giáo xứ Sao Cat, in the heart of Lăng Cô, Thừa Thiên Huế province, holds a history as weathered and resilient as the stone it’s built with. Its story, however, doesn’t begin here, but miles north, in the coastal dunes of Đồng Hới, Quảng Bình. Before 1954, the original Sao Cat parish clung to the Bảo Ninh peninsula. Fishermen cast their nets into the Nhật Lệ River, the waters teeming with tôm cá. Among them were those who also cast their hopes into a different kind of net, one woven with faith. They gathered in small clusters, in the very “sand traps” that gave Sao Cat its name. These early congregations, finding solace and community amidst the harsh realities of life by the sea, became the seeds of the parish. The winds of change, however, blew fiercely in 1954. The Geneva Accords, dividing Vietnam, led to a mass exodus south. Among those seeking a new beginning were the parishioners of Nhà thờ giáo xứ Sao Cat, led by Father Mary-Georges Cressonnier. Their journey was arduous. A week-long sea voyage brought them to Da Nang, then another two by train and foot finally led them to Lăng Cô. Here, by the quiet waters of the An Cư lagoon, they found a place to rebuild. The first mass in this new land was celebrated on August 14, 1954. The parishioners, with remarkable resilience, began to cultivate the land. They built modest homes and, with their own hands, erected a small church, the predecessor of the granite structure we stand before today. Father Cressonnier, a pillar of strength for his flock, oversaw the construction of a five-room school in 1955. The school, built with simple materials, served both as a place of learning for the children and as a temporary residence for the Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres. Finally, in 1956, the new Nhà thờ giáo xứ Sao Cat was officially opened. The grey rooster, salvaged from their church in Quảng Bình, was placed atop the new steeple, a beacon of hope and continuity. The rooster, however, is not a symbol of France, as many assume. It signifies vigilance and awakening, a reminder of St. Peter’s parable. The very stones of Nhà thờ giáo xứ Sao Cat seem to whisper stories. Stories of hardship and resilience, of faith tested and strengthened. From the shifting sands of Đồng Hới to the serene embrace of Lăng Cô, the spirit of Sao Cat has endured, a testament to the unwavering belief of its people.
