In the heart of Ho Chi Minh City, where the bustling streets hum with life, stands a sanctuary of faith and history – Nhà thờ Giáo xứ Phúc Lâm. The church’s story is a testament to the enduring spirit of the Catholic community in Vietnam. During the tumultuous years of 1954, many families fleeing the North found solace in Phúc Lâm. Father Matthieu Chu Thanh Liêm took on the role of pastor, providing guidance and support to the newly arrived community. However, he was forced to leave in 1963 and Father Damine Pham Si Kiem took his role until 1964, when Father Matthieu returned along with a congregation.
The dedicated congregation built the first modest structure, a simple house for worship and prayer. In 1965, Father Giuse Maria Nguyen Huong Nam became the pastor and under his leadership, the community expanded its reach, establishing a parish in 1965. Father Giuse Maria built a small, temporary church, 10 meters wide and 20 meters long, to accommodate the growing faith community. Throughout the years, the church thrived, witnessing many changes and fostering a strong community spirit.
In 1975, Father Giuse Vu Van Nham took over the pastor role. His contribution was significant – he helped build a new, larger church, with 14 chapels for different saints. The church has since been renovated several times, under different pastors, to better serve the ever-growing community, each time becoming more beautiful and welcoming.
The Nhà thờ Giáo xứ Phúc Lâm is not only a place of worship; it is a living testament to the resilience and faith of those who built it, brick by brick.
