Amidst the clamor of Ho Chi Minh City, a sanctuary beckons. Nhà thờ giáo xứ Phú Bình, a beacon of faith, stands on Lạc Long Quân Street. This Catholic parish, established in 1958, offers respite from the city’s hustle. The church’s history is deeply intertwined with the journeys of those seeking both spiritual and material solace. In 1955, Father Tôma Aquinô Phạm Ngọc Biểu, originally from Hanoi, arrived with a vision. He wanted to create a haven and provide vocational training. He secured a substantial plot of land, approximately 12 hectares. This land became the foundation of the Phú Bình Vocational Training Center. It offered training in various trades. The center attracted numerous Catholic families. They hailed from different parts of North Vietnam. They came seeking new opportunities in the south.
The original church, a simple structure of wood and canvas, soon gave way to a more permanent building in 1955. A proper brick-and-mortar church followed in 1958. This marked the official elevation of Phú Bình to parish status by the Saigon Archdiocese. Father Biểu guided the parish for 25 years, overseeing its growth. He was aided by a succession of assistant priests. The church further expanded in 1960 with a new building. It also included a parish house, meeting hall, and classrooms. Following Father Biểu’s passing in 1980, Father Antôn Nguyễn Quang Bạch assumed leadership.
Nhà thờ giáo xứ Phú Bình continued to evolve. Two sub-parishes, Vĩnh Hòa and Phú Hòa, eventually became independent parishes. In 1992, Father Phêrô Nguyễn Xuân Định became the parish priest. He focused on pastoral work and fostered numerous vocations within the community. Later, Father Giuse Nguyễn Văn Niệm took the helm in 1997. He prioritized religious education for the youth and oversaw the construction of a new church. This new church was consecrated in 2010, marking a milestone in Phú Bình’s history.
Today, Nhà thờ giáo xứ Phú Bình serves over 2600 parishioners. It is divided into five sub-parishes. The church remains a vibrant hub of spiritual life. It offers various religious education classes. It also supports charitable activities for those in need. The church hosts lively celebrations. During Christmas, the decorated grounds attract visitors from various backgrounds. The Easter celebrations are equally vibrant, with days of reflection and confession. Nhà thờ giáo xứ Phú Bình, a testament to resilience and faith, continues to serve its community. It stands as a sanctuary of peace in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City.
