“In 1892 two devout individuals Ong Muc Nhi and Ong Thay Kinh lived in Lang Co. They witnessed the growth of Catholicism in Nuoc Ngot a nearby village. Inspired they sought guidance from Father Joseph Nguyen The Chanh. Father Chanh’s arrival in 1894 marked a turning point for Nha tho giao xu Lang Co.”

“Nha tho giao xu Lang Co meaning Lang Co Church is nestled in a picturesque location. It’s situated in Phu Loc District Thua Thien Hue province. This Catholic church is part of the Hai Van Diocese. It’s a significant landmark 70 km east of Hue’s episcopal see.”

“Initially the church faced obstacles. Local resistance to Catholicism presented challenges for the early converts. Financial difficulties also plagued the community. Ong Thay Kinh faced accusations of embezzlement. These issues were resolved through community efforts and the intervention of leaders.”

“Twelve influential villagers bravely journeyed to Nuoc Ngot to embrace Catholicism. Father Chanh responded by sending a catechist to Lang Co. A small thatched structure served as the first church. Within eight months Father Chanh returned for a visit confirming the church’s establishment.”

“The years that followed were marked by both progress and adversity. Periods of religious persecution tested the faith of the community. They petitioned the French authorities for religious freedom. The French colonial government intervened at times. This led to the construction of the first proper church building.”

“Father Rene Morineau the administrator of Thua Luu intervened on the villagers’ behalf. He negotiated with the French authorities. The villagers agreed to certain conditions. They pledged to refrain from certain activities. In exchange they received land and funds for a new church.”

“The construction of the church wasn’t easy. The French requisitioned large amounts of bamboo. This prompted villagers to protest. They sought Morineau’s intervention again. Morineau eventually secured the release of the prisoners. The villagers then compensated the French for their losses.”

“The church continued to grow despite challenges. Subsequent priests dedicated themselves to its development. They focused on religious instruction and community building. They organized cultural and sporting events to strengthen community bonds. They also supported education and vocational training. Many Lang Co parishioners entered religious orders or pursued education.”

“The 20th century brought further trials. The Vietnam War inflicted significant damage on Nha tho giao xu Lang Co. The church’s structure was partially destroyed. The priest and parishioners found refuge elsewhere. After the war they returned. They faced the challenging task of rebuilding.”

“Throughout its history Nha tho giao xu Lang Co has undergone several renovations. Donations from both local and international communities helped rebuild the church. Today Nha tho giao xu Lang Co stands as a testament to the resilience of its community. It’s a symbol of faith and perseverance amidst adversity. It remains a vital part of the religious landscape of Lang Co.”
