Five million French Indochinese piastres. That’s how much it cost to build the Nha Tho Dong Chua Cuu The Sai Gon. This magnificent church stands before you a testament to faith perseverance and architectural ingenuity.
The Nha Tho Dong Chua Cuu The Sai Gon also known as the Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Help or Ky Dong Church is more than just a building. It’s a living history. It reflects the enduring spirit of the Catholic community in Ho Chi Minh City. The Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer arrived in Vietnam in 1925. They established their Saigon branch in 1933. Their mission was to spread the Gospel among the poor. They also promoted devotion to Our Lady of Perpetual Help.
Initially the congregation worshipped in a building near Tan Dinh Church. A generous woman donated the space. Later in 1937 they purchased a two-hectare plot of land. This land was liquidated by the Indochina Bank. They constructed a monastery there completed in 1940. The original Temple of Our Lady of Perpetual Help was then established beside it.
As the number of worshippers grew a larger church was needed. Construction on the current Nha Tho Dong Chua Cuu The Sai Gon began in 1949. It was dedicated on August 3 1952. Father Reverend Beliemare oversaw the project from 1946 to 1953. He played a pivotal role in its completion. The church’s dedication inscription reads Day La Nha Thap Chua Cung Nhan Loai. This translates to This is the House of God with Mankind.
The architecture of the Nha Tho Dong Chua Cuu The Sai Gon is unique. It blends ancient and modern styles. The church’s exterior is relatively simple. It features striking triangle blocks and semicircular door arches. The lack of elaborate ornamentation highlights the statue of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. This statue stands proudly above the main arches. The interior is spacious and bright. Large windows flood the church with natural light. There are no heavy columns obstructing the view. The atmosphere is peaceful and solemn. Within the church grounds you will find a rock cave dedicated to Eve Maria and a mini scene depicting Saint Alphonso. These add to the serene holy ambiance.
In 1963 the Nha Tho Dong Chua Cuu The Sai Gon was officially designated a parish. It became the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Pilgrimage Center. This relatively young parish compared to others in the Saigon Diocese continues to serve its community.
The Nha Tho Dong Chua Cuu The Sai Gon stands as a powerful symbol of faith resilience and architectural beauty. It’s a place where history echoes in the quiet serenity and the devotion to Our Lady of Perpetual Help resonates through time. It’s a place you will remember long after your visit.
