Nhu00e0 Thu1edd Chu1ee3 Cu1ea7u stands before us a testament to resilience and faith. It is located in Hóc Môn District in Ho Chi Minh City. This church has weathered storms both literal and metaphorical. Its history is long. It has been rebuilt and renamed several times.
Established in 1869, Nhu00e0 Thu1edd Chu1ee3 Cu1ea7u owes its origins to the devoted nuns of the Mến Thánh Giá Cái Mơn congregation. These nuns laid the foundation for what would become a vital spiritual center. Later French missionary priests took over its administration during a period when Catholicism was banned in Vietnam. Documents from this period are scarce.
In 1896 missionary priests constructed a simple chapel. It had leaf roofs and columns. This humble structure served the growing community. Sadly records of this early church faded over time.
Around 1920, Father Phaolô Đoàn Thanh Xuân of Tân Hưng parish began to celebrate Mass here. The chapel was destroyed in a fire at some point. It fell into disrepair. The congregation dispersed to other churches. The site became desolate.
In 1964 Father Giuse Nguyễn Hữu Nguyên sought refuge from the war. He brought with him Catholics from Đồng Xá. They came from as far as Hải Phòng. They settled here. Father Nguyên decided to rebuild the church on the old foundation. The walls were made of cement bricks. Sadly a storm caused them to collapse. Undeterred the community rebuilt with four-hole baked bricks. Before they could finish plastering it, the church collapsed again due to rain and storms. Locals began to call it “Nhà thờ Đổ” meaning the ruined church.
In 1971 Father Tôma Nguyễn Văn Khiêm took on the task of reconstruction. He united the local Catholics. He merged the congregation with the Chợ Cầu parish. The people called it “Nhà thờ Nam”. The parish lacked a priest. The new parish was named Tân Hưng Chợ Cầu.
In 1989 Father Tôma Khiêm renovated the church. He added a statue of Saint Joseph. Subsequent parish priests continued to improve the church. They built facilities for the parishioners. In 2015 the church was rebuilt.
Over the years the name of Nhu00e0 Thu1edd Chu1ee3 Cu1ea7u changed several times. In 1979 it was renamed Hàng Sao. This name matched the local administrative name. In 1993 it reverted to Chợ Cầu. In 2002 it was briefly Hàng Sao again. Since 2008 it has been known as Nhu00e0 Thu1edd Chu1ee3 Cu1ea7u.
Today Nhu00e0 Thu1edd Chu1ee3 Cu1ea7u thrives. It has a large congregation. It is divided into nine sub-parishes. Various groups support the church. These include associations for mothers and youth groups. The church is dedicated to Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception.
