Gazing out at the Saigon River, can you feel the echoes of history whispering on the breeze? This, my friends, is Nhà Rồng Wharf, a place where the currents of time and destiny converged. Here at Nhà Rồng Wharf, now the Ho Chi Minh Museum, we stand on hallowed ground. It was from this very spot in 1911 that a young man named Nguyễn Tất Thành, later known as Ho Chi Minh, embarked on a journey that would change the fate of Vietnam forever. He boarded a French steamer as a kitchen helper, seeking a way to liberate his homeland from colonial rule. Little did anyone know that this seemingly ordinary departure would mark the beginning of an extraordinary odyssey.

Nhà Rồng Wharf itself has a fascinating story to tell. Built in 1864, it was originally a bustling trading port. The distinctive building, with its Western architecture and two dragon figures perched atop the roof, earned it the name “Dragon Wharf.” It served as a symbol of French presence in Saigon. The South Vietnamese government later renovated the roof and replaced the dragons, turning their backs as a subtle gesture of defiance after 1955. The wharf witnessed the ebb and flow of commerce. It bore witness to the struggles and aspirations of a nation yearning for freedom.

After 1975, Nhà Rồng Wharf underwent a transformation, becoming a memorial to Ho Chi Minh. In 1995, it was further developed into the Ho Chi Minh Museum. Inside, a treasure trove of artifacts and documents awaits. You can explore nine exhibition rooms filled with photographs, letters, and personal belongings, tracing Ho Chi Minh’s life and revolutionary career. From his childhood in a small village to his leadership of the Viet Minh, the museum reveals the dedication and unwavering spirit of this remarkable man. One particularly moving exhibit focuses on the reciprocal affection between Ho Chi Minh and the people of South Vietnam, showcasing letters, gifts, and photographs that témoignent to their deep bond.

As you stand here, imagine the young Ho Chi Minh, filled with hopes and dreams for his nation, stepping onto that ship. His journey from Nhà Rồng Wharf led him across continents, exposing him to diverse ideologies and shaping his vision for an independent Vietnam. The wharf stands not only as a reminder of his departure but also as a symbol of the resilience and determination of the Vietnamese people. So, take a moment to absorb the atmosphere of this historic site, and let the echoes of the past resonate within you as you reflect on the profound impact of Ho Chi Minh’s journey from Nhà Rồng Wharf.
