Amidst the bustling city of Hanoi lies Nghĩa trang Quân Dân, a cemetery shrouded in an unusual tranquility. Nghĩa trang Quân Dân isn’t just any cemetery. It holds approximately 5,000 souls within its 18,000 square meters. The location itself is unique, nestled in a triangular plot of land bordered by three streets: Lê Văn Lương, Hoàng Minh Giám, and Nguyễn Tuấn. Nghĩa trang Quân Dân has witnessed Hanoi’s transformation over decades. One woman, Nguyễn Thanh Ngực, dedicated 30 years of her life to tending Nghĩa trang Quân Dân. She began her work there in 1989. Back then, the area was less developed. The cemetery lacked proper fencing, and Ngực and her husband had to plant thorny bushes to create a makeshift barrier. For 26 of those 30 years, Ngực actually lived within the grounds of Nghĩa trang Quân Dân. She saw her work as a calling, a way to honor her husband’s relatives who are buried there. She felt a connection to the spirits and a sense of peace within the cemetery walls. Ngực’s dedication extended beyond basic maintenance. She sold water and flowers to visitors, offering a small convenience to those paying respects to their loved ones. She also lit oil lamps and performed Buddhist chants, seeking additional income while providing solace to the grieving. Nghĩa trang Quân Dân became her home, and she never felt fear, despite others’ superstitions. Her children never questioned her choice, respecting her sense of purpose and the peace she found there. In the later years, Ngực adapted to changing times. Families sometimes requested her to tend to their loved ones’ graves remotely. She would then prepare offerings, tidy the graves, take photos, and send them as confirmation. Nghĩa trang Quân Dân also faced the encroachment of development. Nearby construction led to noise and air pollution. Ngực witnessed the area transform as high-rise buildings sprang up around the cemetery. She recounted tales of unusual occurrences. She mentioned seeing a spectral figure beneath the oil lamps, an old man with a long beard, and unexplained events during construction projects. These stories add another layer of mystique to Nghĩa trang Quân Dân, a place where life and death intersect in the heart of Hanoi.
