“Here lie the Americans puppet soldiers who have paid the price for their crimes.” That was a sign once erected outside a cemetery near here. We are at Nghĩa trang Long Hòa. This place is a stark reminder of a painful past. It also shows Vietnam’s journey toward reconciliation.

Nghĩa trang Long Hòa also known as Bien Hoa Military Cemetery witnessed significant events. It is also known as Nghĩa trang Quân Đội Bình An. This was the cemetery for the Army of the Republic of Vietnam. The ARVN fought alongside American forces during the Vietnam War.

Established around 1965 Nghĩa trang Long Hòa became the final resting place. Over 12000 ARVN soldiers were buried here. The earliest graves date back to 1968. Originally the cemetery was known as Bien Hoa Military Cemetery. It served as South Vietnam’s equivalent to Arlington National Cemetery in the USA.

Before 1975 a notable statue stood guard here. It was of a weary ARVN soldier. He sat with his M1 rifle. Sculptor Nguyen Thanh Thu created this work of art. The statue was nicknamed Thuong Tiec meaning regret. Legends say that the Thuong Tiec statue warned of Viet Cong attacks.

The cemetery was carefully planned. A ceremonial road led to a hilltop pagoda. Behind the pagoda a walkway extended into the cemetery. Graves were laid out in circles. At the center stood a circular monument and obelisk. The cemetery had space for 30000 graves. By 1975 approximately 16000 burials had occurred. Half of the graves were covered in cement. The rest were simple dirt mounds.

After the Fall of Saigon in 1975 the statue was destroyed. Access to Nghĩa trang Long Hòa was restricted. It remained so until 2006. Families were then allowed to visit and tend to their loved ones graves. The sign I mentioned earlier stood as a grim reminder of the past.

In 2015 the United States Ambassador to Vietnam Ted Osius visited. His visit signaled a step toward healing. It also showed respect for those who lost their lives. Nghĩa trang Long Hòa is more than a burial ground. It represents loss remembrance and reconciliation. It is a place where history is palpable. It also prompts reflection on the cost of conflict.

Today Nghĩa trang Long Hòa stands as a testament to resilience. It is also about the enduring human spirit. Though its past is filled with sorrow it also holds a message of hope. It symbolizes the possibility of finding peace even after immense suffering. As we leave take a moment to reflect on the stories. Think about the lives represented by each grave here at Nghĩa trang Long Hòa.
