“Beneath the soil of Nghĩa trang Giáo xứ Hải Dương,” a weathered voice whispered, “lie secrets that even the stones can’t tell.” Nghĩa trang Giáo xứ Hải Dương, a Roman Catholic cemetery in Hải Dương, Vietnam, holds not only the departed but also a piece of the town’s rich spiritual history. This cemetery is more than just a final resting place. It’s a testament to the unwavering faith of generations who nurtured and preserved Catholicism in this region. Mid-19th century, the outskirts of Hải Dương became a sanctuary for those seeking religious freedom. This area, known as Khu Năm Mẫu, sheltered individuals persecuted for their beliefs. Among those who died for their faith were four individuals later recognized as martyrs of Hải Dương: Giêrônimô Liêm, Valentinô Vinh, Almato Bình, and Giuse Nguyễn Duy Khang. Their sacrifice became a cornerstone of the local Catholic community. In 1905, a small church arose on this hallowed ground, further strengthening the community’s spiritual core. As the congregation grew, a new church was built in 1927. It became a beacon of faith, known as the largest Catholic church in Vietnam at the time. The church and Nghĩa trang Giáo xứ Hải Dương thrived, witnessing countless baptisms, weddings, and funerals. The annual pilgrimage on November 6th drew crowds of believers, strengthening the bonds of faith within the community. However, this vibrant period ended after the 1954 Geneva Accords. Activities dwindled further after a bombing raid in 1967. The church crumbled, its congregation dispersed, leaving the site in ruins. The dream of rebuilding seemed distant. Yet, the spirit of Hải Dương’s Catholic community endured. In 2006, Father Giuse Dương Hữu Tình arrived, tasked with revitalizing the parish. The reconstruction of Nghĩa trang Giáo xứ Hải Dương and church became a symbol of the community’s resilience. Years of fundraising and planning culminated in the groundbreaking ceremony on November 6th, 2017, exactly 50 years after the church’s destruction. The reconstruction, a collaborative effort of the entire diocese, was completed in 2019 with the inauguration by Bishop Giuse Vũ Văn Thiên. Today, Nghĩa trang Giáo xứ Hải Dương stands not only as a place of remembrance but also as a vibrant spiritual center for the Catholic community of Hải Dương. Its story reminds us that faith, like the human spirit, can endure even the harshest trials and emerge stronger than before.
