Beyond the clamor of Ho Chi Minh City lies Nghĩa trang Giáo xứ Bùi Thượng, a cemetery steeped in history. This isn’t just a place of rest. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of a community. It whispers tales of faith, growth, and the unwavering dedication of its people. The story of Nghĩa trang Giáo xứ Bùi Thượng begins in 1965. Father Tôma Vũ Đức Kiểm and a group of parishioners from Phú Lâm and other areas settled in what is now Tam Hòa ward in Biên Hòa. They laid the foundation for the Bùi Thượng parish. That same year, the Bùi Thượng community built its first modest structure. It served as a place for gatherings, masses, and prayer. Just two years later, in 1967, Bùi Thượng officially became a parish. Father Tôma became its first priest. Over the years, under the guidance of various priests, the Bùi Thượng parish flourished. In 1970, Father Giuse Trần Hiệp Sỹ took on the responsibility of managing the parish. Recognizing the growing needs of the community, he oversaw the construction and inauguration of a new church in 1971. Growth continued under Father Giuse Nguyễn Kim Đoan. He focused on strengthening the faith of the community. He also initiated several construction projects. A bell tower was erected in 1983, the church renovated in 1986, a section of the bridge built in 1989, and a meeting hall and parish house constructed in 1990. The cemetery itself saw development under Father Đaminh Bùi Pháp Dinh. He oversaw the construction of the Đức Mẹ đài in 1992 and the Thánh Giuse đài in 1996. In 1997, the cemetery was reorganized and a đài was built within its grounds. Further improvements included the completion of the church and surrounding area in 1999 and upgrades to the roads within the parish in 2000. Today, Nghĩa trang Giáo xứ Bùi Thượng stands not merely as a final resting place, but also as a living chronicle. It reflects the spiritual journey of the Bùi Thượng community. Their resilience and growth continue to inspire. It’s a story woven into the very fabric of Ho Chi Minh City, a story waiting to be discovered.
