The scent of incense hangs heavy in the air. A gentle breeze whispers through the ancient trees surrounding Nghĩa trang Giáo xứ Bến Gò. This is more than a cemetery. It is a living testament to faith resilience and the enduring spirit of a community.
Nghĩa trang Giáo xứ Bến Gò wasn’t always the peaceful place you see before you. Its history stretches back to 1630 when missionaries first arrived in the Bến Gò area. They found a community ready to embrace a new faith. A simple temporary structure served as the first church.
The year 1692 marked a turning point. Father Francois Perez formally established the Bến Gò Church under the Dong Trong Diocese. It was a humble beginning. The early church was nothing more than a small prayer house. Imagine the dedication of those early believers.
The church itself underwent several transformations. In 1882 under the watchful eye of the Fathers of the Missions Etrangères de Paris a new brick and tile church was built. It measured 11 meters by 29 meters. This marked a significant step for the growing congregation.
However the journey wasn’t without its challenges. The Dong Trong Diocese was divided in 1844. Bến Gò Church became part of the Western Dong Trong Diocese. Later in 1924 it became part of the Saigon Diocese. The church saw further expansions and renovations over the decades. Each alteration reflects the community’s unwavering faith.
Further transformations took place. In 1932 the church underwent construction with more durable materials. This ensured its longevity through many changes. The year 1960 brought significant changes to the church’s governance. Pope John XXIII established the Vietnamese Catholic Hierarchy. The Saigon Diocese then became the Saigon Archdiocese. Bến Gò then fell under the Xuan Loc Diocese.
Father Gabriel Nguyen Khuc Thanh took on the role of pastor in 1969. Two years later Father Paulo Le Van Dieu arrived and he oversaw considerable improvements to the church’s facilities. These improvements were a testament to his dedication.
Father Phero Huynh Van Vinh followed. He oversaw the construction of a new church in 1982. This further expansion highlights the importance of the church to its devoted community. Later Father Longino Nguyen Thoi Mau oversaw renovations and the construction of a new church hall.
The year 2003 welcomed Father Philippe Le Van Nang as the pastor. Two years later Father Francisco Xavier Phan Chiem continued to guide the community’s growth. He spearheaded projects including the construction of the cemetery’s infrastructure.
And finally Father Paulo Doan Thanh Phong took on the responsibility in 2022. He continues the legacy of his predecessors providing spiritual guidance and furthering the development of the Bến Gò community. So here we stand today.
