Consider the scene. Nex\u00f8 bustles with life around its busy harbor. This town on Bornholm’s east coast holds stories of resilience and reinvention. Nex\u00f8 is not just a place it is a testament to the enduring spirit of its people.

Nex\u00f8 began as a humble fishing village. It was linked to the parish of Bodilsker. A chapel served the early community attached to St. Bodil’s Church. In 1346, Nex\u00f8 gained market town rights. The town traded in herring and agricultural goods.

Disasters marked Nex\u00f8’s history. In 1510, L\u00fcbeckers burned the town. Plague decimated the population in 1563. Swedish soldiers plundered Nex\u00f8 in 1645. Another fire struck in 1756. A storm damaged the harbor in 1872. Despite these setbacks, the town persevered.

Around 1800, Nex\u00f8 became Bornholm’s administrative center. By 1806, the town had 21 registered ships and 47 boats. A new harbor basin opened in 1879. Denmark’s first communal drydock followed in 1892. The 19th century saw shipbuilding flourish. The \u00d8stbornholmske Dampskibsselskab began service to Copenhagen in 1877.

World War II brought devastation. In May 1945, Soviet aircraft bombed Nex\u00f8. This happened because the German commander refused to surrender. The town center was destroyed. The Swedish State donated 175 wooden houses. These helped ease the housing crisis. The air raid caused only ten fatalities. This was because civilians were warned in advance. The Red Army occupied Bornholm until April 1946.

A railway connected Nex\u00f8 and R\u00f8nne from 1900 to 1968. Today, Nex\u00f8 hosts a railway museum. It keeps the memory of the railway alive.

Nex\u00f8 Church stands out with its half-timbered tower and copper spire. It dates back to the late Middle Ages. The church was expanded in the 18th century due to prosperity. Fish and sandstone exports to Copenhagen made Nex\u00f8 wealthy.

The Nex\u00f8 Museum is in a historic sandstone building from 1796. It served as the town hall until 1856. The museum showcases the town’s history. Exhibits cover the German occupation and Soviet bombing. Artefacts from Nex\u00f8’s businesses are displayed. These include sandstone quarry items and brewery relics.

Bornholm Butterfly Park is located in Nex\u00f8. Thousands of butterflies fill a former hothouse.

Today, Nex\u00f8 is centered on its harbor and shopping area. Fish processing has given way to new businesses and restaurants. Tourists visit from summer house developments nearby. Nex\u00f8 offers many services. These include a school, library, and sports facilities.

Just south of Nex\u00f8, beaches like Balka and Dueodde beckon. They are known for their white sand.
