Once a neglected space, Newton Highlands Playground now thrives. Newton Highlands Playground now bustles with activity. Back in 2005, it was considered the worst-kept park in Newton. The city recognized the potential of this 13-acre plot. They saw its proximity to a school, residential neighborhood, commercial properties, and the N2 Innovation District. Newton Highlands Playground underwent a significant transformation starting in 2010 when the city began reinvesting in its parks. This revitalization included 31 renovated tennis courts and nine reclaimed fields. The playground’s much-needed renovation began in the fall of 2014, culminating in its grand reopening a year later. The $3.2 million project, largely funded by Community Preservation Act funds, breathed new life into Newton Highlands Playground. The renovation brought baseball and multi-sports fields, basketball and tennis courts, a play structure, and walking trails. Newton Highlands Playground’s revival was a collaborative effort. Youth sports leagues, the Parks and Recreation Department, the mayor’s office, the Community Preservation Committee, and local residents all played a role. It marked the largest park renovation in the city in over three decades. Newton Highlands Playground has become a cherished community hub, offering a place for everyone to enjoy.
