Here in Newton Highlands Historic District, history whispers from every corner. Did you know this village embodies a unique blend of residential charm and commercial vibrancy?

Newton Highlands Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. Initially, it stretched along Lincoln Street. It ran from Woodward to Hartford Streets. It also included parts of Bowdoin, Erie, and Hartford Streets. In 1990, the district expanded. It included commercial buildings on Lincoln Street. These buildings stood between Hartford and Walnut Streets.

The district’s heart showcases architectural styles from 1874 to 1911. Queen Anne and Colonial Revival designs dominate. Development bloomed thanks to railway improvements. James F. C. Hyde spurred these changes. He was a town selectman and later the city’s first mayor. The Hyde School stands as a monument to him. It was built in 1895 in the Romanesque style.

The commercial buildings added in 1990 mirror this era. A standout is the automotive garage at 1151 Walnut Street. Built in 1928, it is the sole survivor of its kind here.

But Newton Highlands Historic District is more than just buildings. Imagine horse-drawn carriages clip-clopping along these streets. Envision families strolling past the Newton Free Library. It is a Queen Anne structure dating back to 1886. Picture the spiritual gatherings at the Methodist Episcopal Church. It was erected in 1893 using the Shingle style. Think about the sermons echoing from the Newton Highlands Congregational Church. This Gothic Revival building was completed in 1906.

Before it was known as Newton Highlands, this area was called Hyde Village. It served as a summer haven for Bostonians. They sought refuge from the city’s commotion. The village offers natural beauty. Picturesque hills and conservation areas surround the area.

Newton Highlands offers an excellent school system. It also provides convenient access to Boston.

Today, the Newton Highlands Historic District stands as a testament to time. It blends residential tranquility with commercial activity. As you wander through Newton Highlands Historic District, remember its evolution. Think about its architectural gems and community spirit. Let the stories of Newton Highlands linger in your memory.
