A new era dawns. Newpark Comprehensive Secondary School stands before you. This isn’t just a school. It’s a living testament to education’s power. Newpark’s story begins long before its 1972 founding. Two smaller schools Avoca and Kingstown Grammar merged in 1968. Their legacy lives on. Avoca School opened in 1892. Kingstown Grammar School followed in 1894. Both served primarily Protestant children in Blackrock and Dún Laoghaire. They welcomed students of all faiths though.
The Department of Education purchased Avoca & Kingstown School in 1972. This created Newpark. Its purpose was threefold. It aimed to provide free secondary education for the Protestant community. It also sought to offer facilities for the local community. Finally it was to be a center for educational innovation. Newpark retains a Christian tradition. It acknowledges its Protestant roots. The Church of Ireland Archbishop of Dublin is its patron. However Newpark embraces diversity. It welcomes students from all backgrounds.
The school’s campus is vast. It covers 25 acres. Initially it used a prefab block opened in 1974. Two large houses Melfield and Belfort also served as classrooms. Students nicknamed Belfort the Red-Brick. In 2015 a new building opened. Many old ancillary rooms were demolished. Belfort and Melfield remain as reminders of the past. Newpark boasts impressive facilities. It has a music academy. This academy established a Jazz and Contemporary Music Department in 1986. It’s now a leading center for jazz education in Ireland. The school also has a sports center. This center includes a swimming pool a sports hall and hockey pitches. Newpark’s sports teams have achieved notable success. Its rugby senior team has held the McMullen Cup since 2007.
The school’s history is rich with notable alumni. Chris Andrews a politician is one example. Sir Hugh Annesley former Chief Constable of the Royal Ulster Constabulary is another. Jonathan Philbin Bowman a broadcaster attended Newpark. So did Niall Connolly a Sinn Féin activist. Many others achieved success in various fields. John A Furlong CEO of the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Organizing Committee is a prime example. Newpark’s legacy extends beyond its walls. It’s a place of learning community and achievement. It embodies the spirit of education’s power to transform lives. The stories within its walls continue to unfold. Newpark stands as a symbol of progress and heritage. A beacon of education in Dublin.
