In the vibrant tapestry of San Diego’s faith communities, Newbreak Church stands as a testament to the power of connection and service. Newbreak Church’s story began decades ago, in the 1970s, with Pastor Mike Quinn and his wife, Teresa. They ministered at a small church in Ocean Beach, located on the corner of Ebers and Cape May. This historic church, originally built in the 1930s, would eventually become one of Newbreak Church’s campuses. The journey to that point was a testament to their dedication and vision. In 1986, Pastor Mike became the Lead Pastor of La Jolla Christian Fellowship. It was a small congregation of just 13 people. Growth was slow for the first 14 years, but those formative years shaped the heart of what would become Newbreak Church. A strong focus on outreach and Life Groups fostered a sense of community. The church thrived as members cared for and celebrated each other, serving the community with passion. Newbreak Church relocated to Tierrasanta in 1994, launching a Saturday night service as Canyon View Christian Fellowship. The move sparked exponential growth. Pastor Robert Wachs joined as Executive Pastor in 2005, supporting Pastor Mike in leading the flourishing community. Pastor Mike’s vision was to grow the church to over 1200 people. He wanted to then send out 200 people to launch new churches in other San Diego communities. This vision began to materialize in the mid-2000s with the planting of a Scripps Ranch campus. In 2009, three more campuses opened, and the church adopted the name Newbreak Church. The Covid pandemic in 2020 brought about an unexpected opportunity with the launch of an online campus. During this time, leadership transitioned. Pastor Robert Wachs became Lead Pastor. Pastor Mike stepped into the role of Network Pastor. Joann Johnson became the Executive Pastor. Pastor Joann played a crucial role in fostering a strong staff culture. She united the teams, especially during the challenging Covid season, keeping them focused on their mission of connecting people with God through authentic relationships and serving communities. Following a personal tragedy, Pastor Robert resigned in November 2023. Pastor Joann skillfully guided the church through the transition and eventually stepped into the role of Lead Pastor in April 2024. Today, Newbreak Church embraces people from all walks of life. It continues to live out its mission of serving the community and cultivating authentic relationships that draw people closer to Jesus and each other. Newbreak Church’s current location at 4694 Cape May Avenue offers indoor and outdoor services. They provide practical preaching, inspiring worship, and opportunities for lifelong connections.
