Did you ever hear of a church that started in a living room? The New York Pentecostal Assembly Church’s story begins just like that. Over 30 years ago, a small group of Keralites, led by Rev. Dr. Joy P. Oommen, sought a new life in New York City. They also sought a spiritual home. Their dream took root in a prayer meeting held in a private residence. This humble beginning blossomed into the New York Pentecostal Assembly Church. The first official service was held on May 24, 1970. The location was a small building on 20th Street in Manhattan. This marked the establishment of the first incorporated Malayalee Pentecostal church in America. New York Pentecostal Assembly Church became a beacon of faith for the growing Malayalee Pentecostal community. The church later moved to Richmond Hill at 101 Richmond Hill, NY 11419. Under the guidance of Sis. Grace P. Oommen, the church established its Children’s Assembly (CA) and Sunday School. Brothers Sunny Phillip and Benjamin Baby played key roles in developing these programs. New York Pentecostal Assembly Church also spearheaded the formation of the Pentecostal Youth Fellowship of America (PYFA) in 1980. The church continued to grow and thrive for years. By 1995, the congregation needed a larger space. They found a new sanctuary just ten blocks away at 133-17 101st Avenue in Richmond Hill. This is where the New York Pentecostal Assembly Church continues to serve its community today. The church’s journey from a living room prayer meeting to a thriving congregation is a testament to the power of faith and community.
