Students study the Hudson and East Rivers measuring water quality learning about marine science and the rivers’ rich history. They even get to sail on schooners like the Lettie G Howard.
It’s not all theoretical learning. The New York Harbor School also offers hands-on training. They have several Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs. Students can choose from vessel operations ocean engineering marine systems technology or even professional scientific diving.
But the best part? Many students participate in the Harbor SEALs Citizen Science Monitoring program. They actively contribute to the improvement and restoration of New York City’s harbor working alongside organizations like the Waterkeeper Alliance.
This isn’t just academics. It’s about building a community passionate about the environment. The school hosts an annual regatta attracting big names like Martha Stewart and even Olympic sailing professionals. Corporate sponsors like Rolex and Goldman Sachs support the school’s mission.
After years of working towards a waterside campus the Harbor School finally moved to Governors Island in 2010. Their new building formerly Building 550 offers amazing views of the Upper New York Bay.
