Did Nathaniel Lord Britton ever imagine his dream would blossom into this? Here at the New York Botanical Garden (NYBG), a 250-acre wonderland in the Bronx, over a million plants thrive. The NYBG sprouted in 1891. Britton and his wife, Elizabeth Gertrude Britton, spearheaded the effort, inspired by London’s Royal Botanic Gardens. They wanted a place for research, education, and beauty, all rolled into one. Their vision took root in Bronx Park, on land once belonging to the Lorillard family. The NYBG became a haven for plant lovers and scientists alike. The Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, a magnificent Victorian-era greenhouse, opened in 1902. It’s a beautiful structure that has undergone numerous renovations, each time improving and expanding its ability to display the incredible diversity of plant life. It houses everything from tropical flowers to desert cacti. The LuEsther T. Mertz Library opened around the same time. It holds one of the world’s largest collections of botanical texts, a testament to the NYBG’s dedication to research and knowledge. Did you know the NYBG houses a 50-acre old-growth forest? This Thain Family Forest is a living time capsule, a remnant of the woods that once blanketed New York City. Some of the trees here have stood for over two centuries. As you stroll through this urban oasis, imagine scientists embarking on expeditions to collect rare plants. The NYBG has sent out over 2,000 missions since the 1890s.
