New World Stages wasn’t always a stage for theatrical dreams. It began life in 1989 as a Loews Cineplex Entertainment multiplex. This underground cinema showed movies for twelve years before closing in 2001. The space remained dormant for a while. Then it briefly served as office space for Deloitte after the September 11 attacks.
In 2002 Dodger Stage Holding Theatricals took on the challenge of transforming the former movie theater into a performing arts space. After substantial renovations the complex reopened in 2004 as Dodger Stages. This transformation was a theatrical resurrection. Mandy Patinkin even graced the opening ceremony.
The complex was renamed New World Stages in 2006 when Stage Entertainment Inc assumed ownership. The Shubert Organization purchased the property in 2014. They continue the legacy of this unique space.
New World Stages boasts five distinct theaters. Stages 1 and 3 have 499 seats each. Stages 2 and 4 hold 350. Stage 5 is the most intimate with 199 seats. The complex’s total square footage is a staggering 61300 square feet. This underground labyrinth stretches the length of a city block.
The venue is known for hosting a variety of shows. These range from Broadway transfers like Avenue Q and Rent to original Off-Broadway productions. This makes New World Stages a hub of theatrical diversity. It even hosts corporate events readings and concerts.
The Green Room a bar and lounge located downstairs adds to the vibrant atmosphere. It’s a place where you can enjoy a drink before or after a show. You can even bring your drinks into the theaters.
