Ten million marks and all paid in cash. That’s what they said when the New Town Hall opened. Right here before you stands the Neues Rathaus. A magnificent building it is. Many mistake it for a palace. It opened in 1913 a landmark of Hanover. It’s more than just a pretty face though. The New Town Hall is the seat of the Lord Mayor. It’s the heart of Hanover’s municipal administration. Meetings are held here. Official visitors are welcomed here. Exhibitions are hosted here. Even the Citizens’ Advice Bureau is based here. But it’s open to everyone.

The New Town Hall’s history is fascinating. Construction began in 1901. It took twelve long years to complete. It replaced the Wangenheim Palace as the main administrative center. The palace itself had taken over from the Old Town Hall in 1863. The New Town Hall has quite the story to tell. It withstood the bombing raids of World War II. Remarkably it survived relatively undamaged. In fact the proclamation of Lower Saxony as a German state took place here in 1946. It was held in the New Town Hall’s impressive 38-meter-high hall.

But the real showstopper is the dome. This is one of a kind. It’s 97.73 meters high offering breathtaking views. On a clear day you can see the Harz Mountains. The lift to the dome is unique. It travels vertically then at a 17-degree angle. It’s like riding a magic carpet up to the heavens. The original lift used steam-bent oak tracks. It was only usable part of the year. A new lift was installed in 2008. The old lift’s final journey was with the Lord Mayor Stephan Weil. Over 1200 people took that last ride.

Don’t just admire the exterior. Take a step inside. Explore the grand halls. The New Town Hall houses four city models on the ground floor. They depict Hanover’s development. They show how the city has changed over time. You’ll get a real sense of Hanover’s rich history. The New Town Hall isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to Hanover’s past present and future. It is a symbol of resilience and progress. It is a place where history and modernity meet. It’s a must-see for anyone visiting Hanover.
