“On March 17 1955 seven devoted members joined Reverend Frank Hitson to establish the New Salem Baptist Church” I imagine someone whispering while looking at the New Salem Church of Christ. It started humbly in Amelia Rogers’ New Orleans home.

Reverend Hitson guided the New Salem Church of Christ for two decades. He led the congregation at their Old Gentilly Road location. Tragedy struck in 1965 when Hurricane Betsy devastated their building. Undeterred the church purchased property at 1632 Alvar Street. There Reverend Hitson continued his spiritual leadership until his passing in 1975.

In 1976 Reverend Warren Jones Jr. stepped in temporarily. By February 1 1977 he was appointed pastor of New Salem Baptist Church. Reverend Jones a charismatic preacher sparked considerable growth. His vision led to significant ministry and outreach opportunities.

The growing congregation needed a larger space. On March 25 2001 a new church building was dedicated at 1530 Alvar Street. This marked a new chapter for New Salem Baptist Church. Numerous auxiliaries and ministries were established. These included hospital and prison outreach programs. They also created a community resource center. Grief counseling mental health services senior adult housing boy scouts and domestic abuse support were added.

Countless individuals have found Jesus Christ through these outreach programs. The church received awards for its dedication to evangelism and mission work. Reverend Jones guided the congregation in crafting a new vision statement.

In 1980 an after-school tutorial program was created. It offered disadvantaged children and youth summer enrichment. Hot meals were served daily. The Youth Center of Hope ministry began in 2015. It aims to evangelize equip and empower at-risk youth. The center provides community workshops for youth and their families. Scholarships are also awarded to high school graduates.
