A fire. A devastating fire. That’s how many remember New Salem Baptist Church. But the story of New Salem Baptist Church is far older than that single catastrophic event. This church stands as a testament to resilience faith and the enduring spirit of a community.
Founded in 1827 just 51 years after the Declaration of Independence it was initially known as the Church of Christ at Salem. The name Baptist wasn’t added immediately but its founding documents clearly stated its Baptist identity. Imagine the lives it has touched the prayers it has witnessed the generations who have walked these very grounds.
For nearly two centuries New Salem Baptist Church has had many homes. Its first location was on Hardy Lane. Then in 1854 that building was used as a school. The church moved again after the Civil War. It met in a building on Hwy 92 that served also as a Union Courthouse. Another move followed in 1884 to Rio. There a new building was constructed on land donated by Mr J W Vaughn. This is where the name officially changed to New Salem Baptist Church. That wooden structure stood until 1956 when termites forced its replacement with a brick building. This was the building most remembered by the congregation.
Then tragedy struck again in 2008. Pastor Norm Daughtery passed away. Just two years later Mike Barnes became the pastor. But the story takes an unexpected turn in December 2012. Lightning struck. The beloved brick church burned to the ground.
It would have been easy to give up. To succumb to despair. But the spirit of New Salem Baptist Church was unbroken. A powerful banner was hung shortly after the fire. It read “The building burned down but our church is still on fire”. It was a bold declaration of survival. More importantly it was a powerful statement of unwavering faith. It signaled the church’s refusal to be defined by loss.
In February 2015 construction began on a new facility. By January 2016 the congregation moved into its current location. New Salem Baptist Church continues to thrive. It’s a place of worship a beacon of hope and a reminder that even in the face of adversity faith endures. This is more than just a building it’s a living testament to the power of community.
