A city of presidents it is called. Quincy Massachusetts. But did you know that long before John Adams and John Quincy Adams were born this land held other stories?

Quincy’s history stretches far beyond its famous sons. It began much earlier. Long before European settlers arrived Native Americans thrived here. They harvested resources from the rich soil and harbors. This land was their home.

The arrival of Captain Richard Wollaston in 1625 marked a turning point. He named the settlement Mount Wollaston. Thomas Morton later took over. He renamed it Merry Mount. He celebrated May Day. This angered the Puritans of Plymouth Colony. They exiled him.

Quincy’s name changed again. This time it was named for Colonel John Quincy. He was a prominent local resident. Abigail Adams’s maternal grandfather. The town was incorporated in 1792. It officially became a city in 1888.

Quincy’s granite quarries were once famous. They supplied stone for important buildings. Like King’s Chapel and the Bunker Hill Monument. Shipbuilding also thrived here for many years. The Fore River Shipyard built many famous warships. Including the USS Massachusetts now a museum ship.

The 20th century brought new industries. Howard Johnson’s and Dunkin’ Donuts were both founded in Quincy. Today Quincy is a vibrant city. A mixture of old and new. A place where history and modern life meet.

It’s a city with a diverse population. It has a large Asian population. Particularly Chinese and Vietnamese. It’s a testament to Quincy’s enduring appeal. A place that continues to attract people from all over the world.

Walk these streets. Imagine the lives lived here. Feel the connection to the past. The granite under your feet whispers tales of industry. The harbor air carries the scent of salt and history. This is Quincy. A city of presidents yes but so much more. A vibrant tapestry of stories waiting to be discovered.
