New Providence Missionary Baptist Church in Houston stands as a beacon of faith. Its history is rich with stories of resilience and community.
Let’s step back in time to the year 1860. A group of 29 enslaved people sought a place to worship freely. Andrew Johnson, Mary Jones, and others formed Providence. They were from the Rowland Plantation.
Initially, they worshiped with their owners. This happened at what is now Catawba Springs Christian Church. They eventually received permission to withdraw. They then established their own congregation.
The Utley family donated a 30 x 30 foot plot of land. This land was near Terrible Creek Spring. The congregation cleared the area. They constructed a brush arbor for worship. They worshiped there for 26 years.
In 1885, Reverend Edwards secured funds from the Wake Association. He used some of the money to purchase land from the Johnson family. This new site was about a half-mile from the original location.
In 1886, the first permanent wood building was completed. It was named New Providence Missionary Baptist Church.
By the early 1900s, the congregation had grown significantly. A larger wood building was needed. This building was completed around 1917. It was quite unique with two steeples. One steeple housed the church bell.
The building featured separate entrances for men and women. Inside, there were three aisles. Women sat on the left. Men sat on the right. Young women occupied the center aisle. A balcony was reserved for white attendees during special services. Later, a baptismal pool was added outside.
By 1971, the congregation’s continued growth necessitated a larger space. A brick building was constructed within three years. On October 10, 1971, the pastor and congregation entered their new house of worship. This building was adjacent to the two-steeple church. Part of it even sat over the old baptismal pool.
In 1988, Reverend Nathaniel J. Wood became the pastor. He brought a new vision for service. Under his leadership, the church grew. It expanded its ministries. Today, New Providence Missionary Baptist Church has over 500 members. It has 11 associate ministers. It has around 25 active ministries. Six choirs contribute to the vibrant worship experience. A dedicated pastoral and administrative team supports the church’s mission.
In 2004, they broke ground for a new sanctuary. By November 13, 2005, they moved into the new facility. The new sanctuary could comfortably seat six hundred. They added a new administrative wing. State-of-the-art technology enhanced their services.
From its humble beginnings under a brush arbor to its modern facilities, New Providence Missionary Baptist Church has been blessed. It stands ready to do even greater works. Its mission is clear. It aims to harvest souls and expand its discipleship.
