A church built for $2.00 That’s the intriguing story of New Prospect Baptist Church. Located in Monroe Virginia this isn’t just any church. It’s a testament to faith perseverance and community. Founded in 1828 as a log church in the Prospect community it evolved. Members bought the land for the current church in 1847. They paid only $2.00. A frame building with a balcony replaced the log structure. The first service was on October 3 1847. Even though the building wasn’t finished the entire community worshipped together. In 1890 a steepled church replaced the frame building. That steepled church stands today. It’s a reminder of the community’s enduring faith. The church continued to grow and adapt. In 1934 an auditorium was built for the local school. The church bought it in 1968. It became the NPBC Social Hall. Work on the Family Life Center began in 1994. It was finished in 1996. It includes a new sanctuary a large stage and seating for many. The original plan for the Family Life Center was different. It was supposed to have a sports area. Damage to the area changed the plans. A covered pavilion was built instead. It’s been used for various activities including revivals and sports. The church office has moved several times. In 2002 the church bought a house and garage. They sit on 50 acres of land. The church office now resides there. The garage houses a food bank ministry. The extra land is for future expansion. New Prospect Baptist Church isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to community faith and growth. A legacy built on a foundation of faith and a mere $2.00.
